El 2025 es un año difícil para las comunidades latinas en Estados Unidos. Las familias viven bajo la sombra de operativos de inmigración que han traído separación, miedo e incertidumbre desde Nueva York hasta Los Ángeles.

Aun así, la historia latina en Estados Unidos no se define solo por la adversidad. Durante siglos, los latinos han sido parte integral del tejido social y económico de la nación, especialmente en los estados del suroeste a lo largo de la frontera con México.

En Texas, California, Arizona, Nuevo México, Nevada y Florida, los latinos contribuyen al crecimiento social, demográfico y económico. Su presencia enriquece las fibras culturales y sociales con sabores, música y tradiciones que hoy están profundamente entrelazadas con la identidad estadounidense.

En estos tiempos difíciles, es más importante que nunca destacar y celebrar las contribuciones de nuestras diversas comunidades — honrar el legado y las tradiciones de las comunidades hispanohablantes en Estados Unidos.

El grupo Latinx & Friends ERG, junto con el equipo de Noticias y Alcance en Español (NOS) de UC ANR, colaboran con orgullo para celebrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana. El tema de este año es “Celebrando nuestra dignidad, nuestro legado, nuestra voz” con el subtema “Pertenecemos, Construimos, Seguimos en Pie”.

UC ANR, consciente de la complejidad de estos tiempos, se une a la celebración reconociendo la dedicación y las contribuciones de su personal y académicos latinos. También honra las raíces culturales que fortalecen nuestro presente compartido.

¿Qué es para ti la Herencia Hispana?

Daisy Valdez – Supervisora de programa – CalFresh Healthy Living – UC ANR:

Hola mi nombre es Daisy Valdez, soy supervisora de CalFresh Healthy Living, UC Cooperative Extension program en Los Angeles.

El mes la Herencia Hispana significa poder honrar mis raíces y celebrar la cultura que mis padres me inculcaron. Ellos son de México y es el amor de familia, el amor de la comida, el amor de las tierras, el respeto a nuestros ancestros y es el respeto al prójimo y poder celebrar la cultura a través de toda la herencia hispana y Latinoamérica.

Alejandrina Orozco – Educadora de nutrición juvenil – UC ANR:

El mes de la Herencia Hispana, para mí significa cultura, raíces, de donde vengo, de donde son mis papás. Es muy importante para mí porque es un tiempo de recordar. Aunque todo el tiempo recordamos porque las comidas. Pero es un mes muy importante de saber que, como dije, de donde vengo, de donde nacimos, las culturas, las comidas, las tradiciones. Muy bonito tenerlas y no importa donde uno esté, pero poderlas tener y celebrarlas.

La celebración de nuestra cultura. Quiénes somos como hispanos, este celebro, quién soy yo, mis padres, mi comunidad, mi lenguaje, mi comida, el baile, la celebración, este, familia en general, mis hijos. Tener ese orgullo en quiénes somos, este dónde vamos, este, todos los sacrificios que hicieron nuestros padres cuando llegaron aquí a este país.

Ingrid Alarcon – Especialista en educación comunitaria – UC ANR:

Hola mi nombre es Ingrid Alarcon, soy educadora de nutrición en el programa CalFresh Healthy Living de la Universidad de California.

Significa mucho. Es estar conectada con mi cultura, con mis raíces, conectada con, con ese lenguaje que nos trae no solamente alimentos, danza, sino nos trae creencias y valores también. Entonces me siento muy honrada de celebrar este mes.

Celebrating our Dignity, our Legacy, our Voice.

We Belong - We Build - We Rise

2025 is a difficult year for Latino communities across the United States. Families live under the shadow of immigration enforcement operations that have brought separation, fear and uncertainty from New York to Los Angeles.

Still, Latino history in the United States is not defined by adversity alone. For centuries, Latinos have been an integral part of the nation’s social and economic fabric, especially in southwestern states along the Mexican border.

In Texas, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and Florida, Latinos contribute to social, demographic and economic growth. Their presence enriches the cultural and social fabric with flavors, music and traditions that today are deeply interwoven into American identity.

In these difficult times, it is more important than ever to uplift and celebrate the contributions of our diverse communities— to honor the legacy and traditions of Spanish-speaking communities in the United States.

The Latinx & Friends ERG, together with the News and Information Outreach in Spanish (NOS) team at UC ANR, proudly collaborate to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month . This year’s theme is “Celebrating Our Dignity, Our Legacy, Our Voice” with the subtheme “We Belong, We Build, We Stand Strong.”

UC ANR, mindful of these complex times, joins the celebration by recognizing the dedication and contributions, of its Latino staff and academics. It also honors the cultural roots which strengthen our shared present.

What does Hispanic Heritage mean to you?

Alejandrina Orozco, Youth EFNEP Nutrition Educator:

My name is Alejandrina Orozco, I work with UC Cooperative Extension, I’m a Community Educator. I’ve been here for about 30 years.

It's our culture, foods, roots, where we come from. Just reminding us that, you know, where is it that I was born, and, not forgetting where I came from, and that it's a beautiful culture. For me, food, family traditions, thinking of growing up, just a lot of memories, and knowing that a lot of richness that we have in our families.

Daisy Valdez, CalFresh Healthy Living Program Supervisor:

Hello.

My name is Daisy Valdez.

I'm a supervisor with the Cal Fresh Healthy Living program. And Hispanic Heritage Month means being able to celebrate my roots, my family, culture, and where my parents came from, Mexico, and all of the heritage and food, and joy, music and dance that it means to be Hispanic and to celebrate and respect each of our cultures all the way through Latin America.

Aba Ramírez, Adult EFNEP Nutrition Educator:

I am a Mexican American woman.

Of course, I was born here, but my parents are Mexican and Guatemalan. What does it mean to me? It means honoring my culture. It means resilience. It means traditions that have shaped me to the person that I am here today. It's not only that, but it's also celebrating the values that my family that they have taught me how to work hard, how to have pride in our roots.

Love my community. Be proud of my family. The importance of family, especially in these times more. It's also remembering the struggles and sacrifices that we faced in the past and that we're facing at this moment in the present. That, also how it has created a lot of opportunities for us here as a people. I'm grateful for everything, for being Mexican American, for my roots, for my culture, and my community.

It's not only that, but looking back also into where we are, where we were, where we are now, and where we are at again. Right. So, we need to start all over again in shaping what our parents had worked so hard for. It's also embracing my identity, my culture, and taking pride in our language. Taking pride of who am I. My music, my food, that, you know, the strength that we carry through all the challenges, also, above all, a celebration that we are, and a reminder that our heritage is a source of power. You know, beauty and connection.
