Celebramos a Ana Pastrana: Hispana del Año 2025 de UC ANR
Conocer a Ana María Pastrana León es descubrir una historia guiada por la admiración: hacia la tierra, hacia la ciencia y, sobre todo, hacia quienes cultivan nuestros alimentos.
Criada en una comunidad agrícola del sur de España, Ana encontró desde joven su vocación. Su camino la llevó por tres países y dos continentes, desde su doctorado en España hasta investigaciones avanzadas en Canadá y California.
Hoy, como asesora de fitopatología vegetal para UC ANR en el sur de California, colabora directamente con agricultores para prevenir y controlar enfermedades de los cultivos con soluciones prácticas basadas en la ciencia.
Su trabajo protege cosechas, pero su impacto va más allá: fortalece la resiliencia de las comunidades agrícolas, especialmente en tiempos inciertos. Lo que la distingue no es solo su conocimiento, sino también su profunda vocación humana.
"Admiro la resiliencia de los agricultores", afirma Pastrana. "Trabajan tan duro para alimentar al mundo. Me encanta cómo se adaptan a los desafíos”. Finalizó diciendo.
Ella es científica, solucionadora de problemas y creadora de puentes entre personas. Representa lo mejor de los profesionales latinos que trabajan en UC ANR: equidad, comunidad y ciencia al servicio del bien común, reflejando así los Principios de Comunidad que guían nuestro trabajo.
También reflexiona sobre la importancia de celebrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana:
"El Mes de la Herencia Hispana es una gran oportunidad para compartir nuestras raíces, nuestras historias y el valor que la comunidad hispana aporta a este país", señala Pastrana.

Director de Centro de Investigación y Extensión del Desierto de la Universidad de California. Quiero felicitar a la doctora Ana Pastrana por ser reconocida durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana.
He tenido el placer de conocer a la doctora Pastrana desde que ella está vinculada con la División de Agricultura y Recursos Naturales aquí en el Valle Imperial. Ella ha hecho un trabajo extraordinario con las diferentes organizaciones, agricultores aquí en el Valle Imperial en el sur de California. En particular, quiero resaltar que ella ha estado atendiendo las necesidades de la comunidad Latina en diferentes aspectos. De nuevo, felicitaciones doctora Pastrana y los mejores deseos.

La coordinadora del programa de UC Jardineros Maestros aquí en el Condado de Imperial. Y quiero empezar por felicitar a Ana Pastrana, que la están reconociendo en el mes de la Herencia Hispana.
Ana Pastrana nos ha ayudado mucho aquí en las oficinas de UCCE en Holtville, California. Por ejemplo, nos acaba de dar una clase a todos los UC Jardineros Maestros de aquí del Valle Imperial y les enseñó todo de cómo identificar plagas en las plantas aquí locales. Esa información, los Jardineros Maestros han podido llevar a la comunidad y hacer diferentes clases donde les enseñan a la comunidad cómo identificar esas plagas. Muchas, muchas felicidades Ana y muchas gracias.

Hola, mi nombre es Ana Resendiz,
Especialista en educación comunitaria del Programa de Agricultura Climáticamente Inteligente y hoy quisiera felicitar a Ana Pastrana por su reconocimiento en este mes de la Herencia Hispana. Es muy grato trabajar con Ana. Desde que llegó aquí al condado hemos tenido varios proyectos específicamente brindando servicios a las comunidades hispanas en el condado de Imperial, Riverside y San Diego. Cuando llegó, hicimos un Open House para agricultores hispanos. Nos dimos a la tarea de encontrarlos aquí en el condado de Imperial para brindarles servicios y darles a conocer todos los programas que hay disponibles para ellos.
En el condado de Riverside, hemos, ella es parte fundamental de reuniones anuales que témenos con agricultores hispanos, no solamente para que ella les brinde su servicio de patología, sino también para encontrar a otros proveedores de servicios que puedan apoyarlos en sus necesidades. Y finalmente, por ejemplo, en el área de San Diego, Ana ha sido una pieza fundamental con una agricultura de agave con la que no solamente ha servido el cultivo de agave, sino también en otros diferentes cultivos y ha sido una pieza clave para poder conectar a esa agricultura con diferentes proveedores de servicios del Estado. Y con eso quiero concluir y felicitar nuevamente a Ana en este mes. Muchas gracias.

Celebrating Ana Pastrana: UC ANR Hispanic of the Year 2025
Meeting Ana María Pastrana León is discovering a story rooted in admiration—admiration for the land, for science, and above all, for the people who grow our food.
Raised in a farming community in southern Spain, Ana found her calling early in life. Her journey has taken her across three countries and two continents, from earning her Ph.D. in Spain to conducting advanced research in Canada and California.
Today, as a plant pathology advisor for UC ANR in Southern California, she works directly with growers to prevent and manage crop diseases using science-based, practical solutions.
Her work protects crops, but her impact goes much further—it strengthens the resilience of farming communities, especially in uncertain times. What sets her apart is not just her knowledge, but also her human approach.
“I admire how resilient farmers are,” says Pastrana. “They work so hard to feed the world. I love how they adapt to challenges.”
She is a scientist, a problem-solver, and a connector of people. Ana represents the best of the Latino professionals at UC ANR: equity, community, and science in service of the public good embodying the Principles of Community that guide our organization.
She also reflects on the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month:
“Hispanic Heritage Month is a wonderful opportunity to share our roots, our stories, and the value the Hispanic community brings to this country,” Pastrana adds.
For all these reasons, we proudly celebrate Ana Pastrana as UC ANR’s Hispanic of the Year 2025.

I’m the director of the University of California Desert Research and Extension Center in Holtville. I want to congratulate Dr. Ana Pastrana for being featured during the Hispanic Heritage Month. I know Dr. Pastrana since she arrived to UC ANR here in Imperial County. She has been such a great researcher, putting together different proposals, working here at the center, working with the growers, and in particularly reaching out to our Latino community. She has been understanding their needs and in supporting them. So again, congratulations, Dr. Pastrana, for being featured during the Hispanic Heritage Month.

The UC Master Gardener program coordinator for Imperial County, and I'd like to congratulate Ana Pastrana on being recognized during Hispanic Heritage Month. I have the pleasure of working with Ana here at the UCCE offices in Holtville, California. She's such a great advisor to have around. She recently helped the UC Master Gardeners receive a few hours of CE classes by presenting them all the information they would need about identifying diseased plants.
They had the opportunity to have a very fun, hands-on, interactive activity with Ana, identifying different diseases on different leaves of local plants. Since then, they've been able to take that information and apply it to our community projects, delivering different workshops and helping out in different administrative gardens. It's been a lot of fun and helpful information.

Hello, my name is Ana Resendiz
Community Education Specialist for the Climate Smart Ag program, and I just want to say congrats, Ana Pastrana, in this Hispanic Heritage Month. I just want to highlight some projects that I worked with her, with the Spanish-speaking community here in Imperial. When she arrived, we started like, an open, an ongoing project to reach out to small-scale Spanish-speaking farmers here in Imperial, and we organized, open house for them here in the Imperial office.
We provide resources and services that we provide to them. We also have an annually meeting with small-scale Spanish-speaking farmers in Coachella. She's an active and fundamental part of that project. And we also work with a Spanish-speaking farmer that is based in San Diego, an agave farmer. And she’s also collaborating more actively with her and supporting with other resources, not only the pathologist part. Thanks Ana, congratulations again.

Hi, my name is Philip Waisen
I am a Vegetable Crops Advisor based in Coachella Valley covering Riverside and Imperial counties. I would like to congratulate Ana Pastrana on being recognized, and featured in, Hispanic Heritage Month, for the incredible work she's doing in serving our clientele in Southern California.
I worked with Anna on multiple occasions. One of which is responding to grower calls, the field calls where whatever the grower you know, questions they have, they reach out to us, and then we go directly to see, you know, challenges, including, pests and diseases that they are facing.
What we do is organize client meetings, including our Latino growers meeting. We organize two meetings together and pest control advice and meeting as well as, you know, vegetable crops, and IPM meeting. So having Anna as a plant pathologist is really complementing the expertise we have so that we can serve our clientele.
