David R Haviland

David R. Haviland
Entomology and Pest Management Advisor

David Haviland has served as the Entomology and Pest Management Advisor for Kern County since 2002, and is affiliated with the UC Statewide IPM Program. He has responsibilities to develop and disseminate integrated pest management programs that address pest management needs across all commodities grown in the southern San Joaquin Valley.  He has focused his efforts on permanent crops, where he has worked on monitoring programs, treatment thresholds, chemical control, biological control and mating disruption of key pests of almonds, pistachios, grapes, citrus, blueberries and cherries. This has helped growers defend themselves from native and invasive pests such as navel orangeworm, spider mites, vine mealybug, spotted wing drosophila, Gill's mealybug, stink bugs, citrus thrips and ants. Throughout his career, David has shared the results of his work through more than 850 extension presentations and 450 publications, most of which have targeted grower and pest control advisor audiences.
