This week on In The Garden with UC Master Gardeners, we blend old with new! Last week, Teena Spindler told you about her favorite ways to keep her garden as spectacular now after all of the work over the years.
The heavy design part is done and proven. Now, everything that has “naturalized” will come back every year. So today, our NEW Master Gardener Radio Host, Marilyn Johnson, wanted to be specific and talk to Teena about her self-professed early LOVE of Bulbs! We are talking about Fall-Planted Bulbs for Spring Bloom today! “Bulb” is the most common term for a plant that has an underground or near underground storage organ or structure. Corms, rhizomes, tubers, and tuberous roots are other types of structures that generate some of your favorite flowers. Now is the time to get and plant those spring-blooming like Dutch Iris, Daffodils, and Freesia as they are favorite, and easiest, choices to start your bulb adventure! But be aware of those that like chill such as Tulips and Crocus. Learn more about the Ranunculus seen by the acre every spring off the 5 Freeway going south into Carlsbad! Learn proper fertilization too!
