The Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) and the University of California Alianza MX (UC Alianza MX) are hosting a joint call to enable the establishment of new collaborative research initiatives that have the potential to create permanent ties between UABC and the UC that will grow and continue with the support of other institutional and extramural funds.
Collaborative research proposals should significantly promote scientific knowledge and technological advances that contribute to a positive social impact in at least one of the following thematic areas. Preference in the selection process will also be given to proposals that foster interdisciplinary collaboration and/or include innovative applications of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence or machine learning.
- Sustainable food systems and binational food security
- Climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural production
- Food technology and agro-industrial innovation
- Policies to combat food insecurity in vulnerable communities
- Equity in access to nutritious food in rural and urban areas of northwestern Mexico and California
- Mental health and social cohesion in contexts of vulnerability
- Community interventions for emotional well-being
- Youth, structural violence, and psychosocial health
- Migration and cross-border trauma
- New technologies for mental health care
- Energy transition and sustainability of critical materials
- Technologies for the reuse, recycling, and safe disposal of lithium batteries and other materials
- Life cycle analysis (LCA) and environmental impact of components used in clean energy
- Binational challenges in managing technological waste from transportation electrification
- Innovation in sustainable materials and circular economy strategies
Eligibility: Must include at least two PIs from the UC system and two PIs from UCAB. (4-Co-PIs total)
Award Ceiling:
- UC: $25,000 per project per year, plus up to $5,000 per project per year for travel expenses to participate in UABC research workshops;
- UABC: $25,000 per project per year. In-kind support required to host research workshops.
Duration: 2 years
Due date: December 5, 2025
Only One project per thematic area will be selected for funding.
