Dr. Jhalendra Rijal is a Cooperative Extension Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Advisor with the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources. Based in the northern San Joaquin Valley region, he leads applied research on insect pests of tree nuts and fruits and works closely with growers, pest control professionals, and industry stakeholders to advance sustainable IPM practices
His research focuses on understanding the biology of the pest, the development of innovative monitoring tools, and utilizing behavioral, biological, and other IPM-based strategies to promote IPM in specialty crops. Rijal has made significant contributions to the management of invasive and endemic pests in tree nuts, tree fruits, and other specialty crops. His invasive pest research includes work on brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), spotted wing drosophila (SWD), and carpophilus beetle, while his endemic pest studies focus on navel orangeworm, plant and stink bugs, walnut husk fly, Pacific flatheaded borer, and beet leafhopper–related curly top disease in processing tomatoes.
Before joining UC Cooperative Extension, Rijal was a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Entomology and Nematology at UC Davis, where he developed IPM strategies for peppermint and cool-season vegetables targeting mint root borer, spider mites, and the invasive Bagrada bug. He earned his Ph.D. in Entomology from Virginia Tech, where his research examined the spatial distribution and food-finding behavior of larval grape root borer in vineyards.
Rijal has led numerous applied research projects, published extensively, and is recognized for developing grower-driven, science-based IPM solutions for California’s nut and fruit industries. Rijal’s work has been widely recognized with student, professional, and institutional honors, including the Friends of IPM regional award from Southern Regional IPM for his doctoral research, the Virginia Tech Entomology Outstanding Recent Graduate Alumni award, multiple Entomology/IPM Team Awards, and a national academic excellence award from the President of Nepal for his master’s studies.
