Every place people garden is unique, but the Eastern Sierra seems, perhaps, more so.
There is a long history of raising crops on the east side, beginning with Native Americans who grew crops like taboose and nahavita before the arrival of European settlers. In the closing years of the 19th Century and into the 20th, fruit trees, grains, and root crops were grown widely in the region.
With changes in land ownership came changes in land use. Much that was known about raising horticultural crops and gardens was lost.
There are not many resources with good information on gardening in Owens Valley and other east side locations. This page is the Inyo-Mono Master Gardeners' compilation of locally relevant information.
